Grandmom’s Coffee Cake
This recipe was one used by Joe Bogard’s grandmother who immigrated from Hungary.
– Gay Bogard
Aunt Gay makes loaves of this bread each Christmas and I always look forward to having toasted slices of it. Delicious!
– Terry
Ingredients
- 4 cups flour
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 stick butter
- 1 lemon rind, grated
- ½ tsp. salt
- ⅛ tsp. mace or nutmeg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 pkg. yeast
- few white raisins
Instructions
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, lemon rind, salt, and mace.
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm milk and ½ tsp. sugar. Then add to egg mixture, along with raisins and flour. Mix well. Let rise.
When risen, knead and shape into loaves. Grandmom always baked it in a tube pan, but I usually double, triple, even quadruple the recipe and make numerous size loaves.
Bake at 350°F for 45-60 minutes for tube pan, much less for loaves (15-30 mins based on size).
