Grammy Soule’s Sugar Cookies

Gramp’s memories of  his Grammy Soule’s sugar cookies:  As a young boy visiting his grandmother on the farm, he would come downstairs in the morning to the smell of sugar cookies being taken from the oven of the old wood stove.  “The aroma was heavenly and as I entered the kitchen, she would pick up a pan and offer me a cookie.  Life never got better than that.”

Kathy’s Addendum to her nieces and nephew:  This is a recipe that has been handed down in the family from Grammy Soule which is why the directions are so brief and mentions how she made them.  She was your Great-Great Grandmother who was born in 1872 and died just a week shy of her 100th birthday.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 – 2½ cups flour – to make soft dough

Instructions

  1. Roll out ¼” for thick cookies like Grammy made.  But thin ones are delicious too.
  2. Sprinkle sugar or cinnamon sugar on cookies.
  3. Bake at 350° F for 8-10 minutes.  Remove from oven when barely brown around the edges.

Note

  • The recipe has been left in the original form to preserve its history.
  • I would make these like you would any other cookie by creaming the fat and sugar, adding egg and vanilla then the dry ingredients.
